With a variety of handy tools and great services available, it’s never been easier to travel around by public transport. New technology means you don’t have to wait around at bus stops, many buses and trains now have WiFi on board, cashless ticket options and more!
Currently, your nearest bus stops can be found a short walk away, on either Tanfield Lea Road (in Tanfield Lea) or Maud Terrace (in Tanfield). Plans are in place, however, to improve local bus options with the benefit of funding paid to the Council by Miller Homes and Story Homes – keep an eye out for further details.
If your journey is over a longer distance, making the trip by train can often be more convenient and faster than a journey by car. Your nearest train station is found at Chester-le-Street, around 10km away. Located on the East Coast Mainline Chester-le-Street station is served by both local Northern services and longer distance TransPennine Express services. More frequent rail connections can also be accessed slightly further away, from either Durham of Newcastle.

Key local bus services accessible from near Station Fields and Heritage Fields include:
Service 713/714 – Stanley Circular
Operating from stops on Tanfield Lea Road, service 713/714 operates every 60 minutes, Monday to Saturday (no service on Sundays). The service is operated by Stanley Travel.
Service 6 – Newcastle to Stanley and Lanchester
Operating from stops on Tanfield Lea Road, service 6 operates every 30 minutes, Monday to Saturday, with an hourly service on Sundays. The service is operated by Go North East.
Service X73 – Stanley to Newcastle, via MetroCentre
Operating from stops on Maud Terrace, service X73 operates hourly, Monday to Saturday (no service on Sundays). The service is operated by Go North East.

Causey Road: X30, X31, X32
Front Street, Tantoble: X70

Paying for your Journey
Catching the bus or train no longer has to mean fumbling around for change before hopping on to pay the driver or conductor in a rush! There are so many different ways to pay for your journey now that you may feel a little spoilt for choice!
It’s also important to check that you aren’t paying too much. Whilst paying for single or return tickets is OK for occasional or one off journeys, those who travel more frequently by bus and/or rail can save some significant cash by choosing monthly or annual passes.

Gone are the days of standing around waiting for your bus or train with little idea when it will turn up. Real time information makes it easy to find out exactly where your ride is at, helping you plan when to leave the house, office or coffee shop.
Bus operator apps have proved to offer a real step change when it comes to real time bus information. They display the exact location of your bus on a handy map, in a very similar style to the Uber app which many are now familiar with.
